What is Moderation Management?
Moderation Management (MM) is a behavioral modification program and support network that offers an alternative to abstinence-based treatment approaches. Rather than requiring complete cessation, MM focuses on helping you re-invent your relationship with gambling or alcohol and other drugs through personalized goals and supportive accountability structures.
This evidence-based approach is designed for people who are uncertain about abstinence but recognize the need for change.
Who is Moderation Management For?
Moderation Management may be right for you if:
- The idea of complete abstinence doesn’t feel right or realistic for you
- You have a less problematic addiction profile without active dependence
- You want to reduce consumption but not eliminate it entirely
- You’re experiencing consequences (financial, legal, relational, and health) from your current use
- You prefer autonomy and choice in your treatment planning
- You want to distance yourself from the stigma often associated with traditional recovery communities
Who Should NOT Choose Moderation Management?
Moderation management is not appropriate for individuals with:
- Significant health concerns (alcohol & substance use disorder diagnosis, chronic liver or kidney disease)
- Active physical dependence or current use disorder status
- Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant
- Cognitive impairments such as dementia
- Repeated unsuccessful attempts at moderation management
If you fall into these categories, RCM Health can help you explore other treatment pathways that may be more suitable.
What Makes This Different From “Just Cutting Back on Your Own”?
While some people successfully moderate on their own, structured MM provides:
- Professional guidance and accountability
- Evidence-based strategies and behavioral modification techniques
- Regular monitoring and adjustment of your plan
- Support during challenging moments
- Medical oversight when appropriate
- A framework that actually works, not just good intentions
Here’s the reality: Moderation Management isn’t the “easier, softer way.” When done properly, MM requires significant discipline, self-awareness, and commitment. It’s often more challenging than abstinence because it requires constant decision-making and self-regulation.
Can You Still Drink or Gamble While in the Program?
Yes. Moderation Management allows for continued consumption within the limits you establish with your treatment team. However, this is not a license to “drink whenever you want” – there are self-imposed, responsible limits based on your specific goals.
If at any point you decide that complete abstinence is the right path for you, that option exists within the MM framework. Your treatment plan can adapt as your needs evolve.
